May 2026 Film & TV Recap | 12 Films, 8 TV Shows, Quite A Month I’ve Had

May 2026 Film & TV Recap!

Wow, I watched a ton of things this month. On the movie front, I hit double digits. On the TV front, the two ‘special episodes’ I watched increased the number to 8. I wish I had the time to review all of the titles I watched, but I couldn’t. However, I did try to as much as possible. Whether or not I will review the pending titles later depends on my schedule. Until then, you can check out my mini reviews!

So, without further ado—

May 2026 Film & TV Recap (FILMS):

Airplane (1988) dir. Jerry Zucker, David Zucker & Jim Abrahams

Airplane 1988 film poster

I remember loving this film when I first watched it years ago. And many of the gags and jokes are still hilarious. However, there’s many elements in this one that haven’t really aged well.

Watching this film again years later, I just couldn’t bring myself to appreciate it like before. That’s saying something, given how Airplane is so highly rated as one of the funniest movies ever made. In many ways it is, but it is also a product of its time. For movies that have aged better, watch Monty Python, I’d say.

La Haine (1995) dir. Mathieu Kassovitz

La Haine 1995 French Film Poster

I’ve been wanting to watch this one for a very long time. This month, I finally got the chance, and what a powerful experience this was.

I absolutely loved how it captured the experience of being a minority/immigrant in troubling times. Set in the wake of a riot that was caused by police brutality, the film brilliantly captures the frustration and angst of those that society seems to have rejected.

Agent of Happiness (2024) dir. Arun Bhattarai & Dorottya Zurbó

Agent of Happiness 2024 Bhutanese documentary film poster

I watched this one after Richa Chadha recommended it in an episode of Dekh Bhais. The idea seemed really interesting, and I wanted to see both Bhutan as well as what the Gross National Happiness philosophy really is like.

A bittersweet film that looks at its subjects with empathy and care, I would call this a must watch. It almost felt like having gone to Bhutan on a vacation, meeting people from all walks of life. What’s more, the film doesn’t give us a biased view of GNH. Without being overtly political, it did a brilliant job of showing us an almost unfiltered look into Bhutanese society.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) dir. Jim Cummings

The Wolf of Snow Hollow 2020 Film Poster

This film had a great concept and a lot of potential. Sadly, mediocre visuals and sound, an underdeveloped script, and very bad performances leave you with a half-baked movie. Having watched Jim Cumming’s Thunder Road, this film honestly left me quite disappointed.

The film actually started off strong, but quickly devolved into a bad film that robs you of what could have been a experience. It actually has the potential to be a cult classic, but the several plot holes might not allow it.

Project Hail Mary (2026) dir. Phil Lord & Christopher Miller

Project Hail Mary 2026 featuring Ryan Gosling as Dr Ryland Grace and Rocky

Project Hail Mary was one of the best books I read in 2024. With Phil Lord & Christopher Miller helming this project, written by Drew Goddard, I had very high expectations from this one.

The trailers seemed promising, and the reviews only reassured me that this was going to be a fun watch. Lucky for me, it really was! Admittedly, I had some issues with the adaptation. However, they didn’t really spoil my watching experience, because as a film, this was an absolute spectacle. I get why many are calling this film a return to form for cinema.

Vinchu (2026) dir.

Vinchu The Scorpion 2026 Short Film

A sweet little political satire comedy short film that’s free to watch on Masoom Rajwani’s YouTube channel.

If you live in India, this one is going to resonate with you really well. I don’t have a ton of things to say about this, other than watch it. It’s simple, straightforward, but very evocative. The characters feel real, the conflict is relevant, and it’s not so hard-hitting that you’ll be left in a bad mood. It will, however, compel you to think.

My Rating: ★★★1/2

Train Dreams (2025) dir. Clint Bentley

Pusher Trilogy (1996-2005) dir. Nicolas Winding Refn

Pusher Trilogy by Nicholas Winding Refn featuring Kim Bodnia, Mads Mikkelsen & Zlatko Burić

I went on an impromptu Nicolas Winding Refn binge one weekend. It started with his Pusher Trilogy, and what an unsettling experience it was. From Frank struggling to pay back his debt, to Tonny just trying to do better now that he’s out of jail, to even Milo struggling with his age as the world around him seems to leave him behind, every single film has something powerful to offer.

Visually, they keep getting better. Thematically and character-wise too. You can really see Refn’s growth as a filmmaker within this Trilogy alone. And he went on to make Drive and other brilliant movies later. That’s pretty impressive, if you ask me.

Bronson (2008) dir. Nicolas Winding Refn

Bronson by Nicholas Winding Refn featuring Tom Hardy

The last of my Refn binge, Bronson was quite the fever dream. Tom Hardy’s performance really steals the show. Which is saying something, given how colourful and chaotic the film is. From its vaudeville-style theatrical pieces, to its insane sequences of Bronson’s wild behaviour, every single scene in this film is a masterclass in creating an entertaining spectacle.

While it doesn’t have a lot to say overall, the film itself is an experience worth living through at least once.

My Rating: ★★★★

Father Mother Sister Brother (2025) dir. Jim Jarmusch

Father Mother Sister Brother 2025 by Jim Jarmusch Film Poster

I really loved Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). Expecting something similar, I went into watching this Golden Lion winner.

A sweet tragicomedy featuring three dysfunctional families, each story had something profound to offer. Each of the segments felt very real to me, especially given how subtle the dissonance is between the characters. I personally found the Father segment the most interesting. However, I loved the characters in the Mother segment a lot more. Sister Brother didn’t resonate with me as much because I don’t have siblings, but it was still enjoyable.

Overall, a nice, slow burn that’s not really for everyone. If you love festival movies, this is going to be right up your alley.

May 2026 Film & TV Recap (SHOWS):

Gary (2026) | The Bear Special Episode

Gary 2026 The Bear featuring Jon Bernthal as Michael "Mikey" Berzatto & Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richard "Richie" Jerimovich

I loved the first 2 seasons of The Bear. I found the third to be mediocre, and the fourth season to be outright bad. Yet, given that Richie was one of the main focuses of this episode, I was intrigued. If you’re a fan, you might love this one. But if you had issues with Seasons 3 & 4, you might not appreciate this episode as much.

Honestly, Gary had many interesting and powerful character moments. Sadly, the episode overall added nothing major to my experience of The Bear. We don’t really learn anything new, and the cliffhanger in the end felt a tad cheap. I know I’m not going to

Rooster Season 1

Rooster HBO Original Poster featuring Steve Carell

Not only is One Piece one of my all time favourite stories, it’s objectively one of the most important stories being told in current times. With the first season of Netflix’s live action show doing such a brilliant job of adapting Eiichiro Oda’s epic, I was super hyped for season 2. Especially considering it takes us to Drum Island with Chopper’s backstory, and slowly making its way towards Alabasta.

From its accurate character designs to its loyalty to One Piece’s story and aesthetics, the live action continues to impress.

The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026)

Punisher One Last Kill 2026 Poster featuring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle

I really loved the first season of Netflix’s The Punisher. I don’t remember if I watched Season 2, but I doubt I did. Most of the recent MCU entries have been quite disappointing, so I wasn’t stoked to see this on my feed. However, given that it’s just a one-off special, I thought I’d give it a shot.

To my pleasant surprise, it was actually not bad. However, it was expectedly mediocre. The action was great, but the emotional arcs and writing did feel underdeveloped. Overall, an okay watch. Fans will love it, but non-fans most probably will not.

The Franchise (2024)

The Franchise 2024 TV Poster featuring Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Daniel Brühl HBO

I really wanted to like this one. Sadly, it ended up being a very dull and mediocre watch with bursts of brilliance. Honestly, I feel like The Studio Season 1 did a significantly better job than this one.

The absurdity and goofiness is all there. But it feels very much mellow. The ‘realism’ of it all brings down the show’s exaggeration. None of the characters really stood out, and knowing how absurd things really are in the movie business, this show feels very much lacklustre. Not a bad watch, but nothing memorable either.

The Boys Season 5

The Boys Season 5 Poster featuring Antony Starr as John Gillman / Homelander & Chace Crawford as Kevin Kohler / The Deep, Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett, Susan Heyward as Jessica "Sage" Bradley / Sister Sage, Valorie Curry as Misty Tucker Gray / Firecracker, Daveed Diggs as Oh Father, & Jensen Ackles as Ben / Soldier Boy. Amazon Prime Video.

Oof, that was rough. While Season 5 was pretty much an improvement on Season 4, it still pales in comparison to the first two.

The ending is very fitting, if I’m being honest. The journey to the end, however, is very dull and boring. Almost as if the writers used AI to figure out the best story beats, but failed to develop their story enough to justify those beats. There was little-to-no character progression. Emotionally, it was just blah. And the ending didn’t leave the impact it should have.

Spider-Noir Season 1

Spider-Noir Season 1 Official Poster featuring Nicholas Cage as Ben Reilly : The Spider

I really wanted to love this show. And honestly, it has a ton that can be appreciated. For starters, the noir treatment and the visuals of the True Hue Colour really pop. Nicolas Cage’s performance is expectedly weird and mesmerising.

However, the show also suffers from a convoluted plot and a lacklustre roster of characters. A little more developement of the story and screenplay, with a more consistent quality would have resulted in a more compelling watch.

Deli Boys Season 2

Deli Boys Season 2 Poster featuring Asif Ali as Mir Dar, Saagar Shaikh as Raj Dar, Poorna Jagannathan as Naveeda 22Lucky 22 Aunty, Fred Armisen as Max Sugar

Deli Boys Season 1 was one of my favourite watches of 2025. The good thing was that Season 2 was just as dark and funny. The bad thing, however, is that it plummets in terms of plot, character, and overall writing. Neither of the two main plot-lines were interesting enough. The main villain was too annoying. And, the season was cut down to only 6 episodes, which could explain the pacing and writing issues.

Honestly, Season 2 feels like a poor filler season. And that’s disappointing, given how much I loved Season 1.

May 2026 was quite an eventful month on the TV and Film side. I watched a lot more movies and TV than previous months. I finished binging on Brooklyn Nine-Nine for the umpteenth time, and started watching Rick & Morty Season 9! I don’t know if I will be maintaining this streak next month. But, who knows?
