The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) Review:

If I had a nickel for every television special I watched in May 2026, written by and starring Jon Bernthal, set in a series that I have pretty much lost all interest in, I’d have two nickels. That isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. However, unlike Gary (The Bear Special Episode), I actually did like The Punisher: One Last Kill.

I have been honest with my thoughts about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Honestly, I think it has become a stinky pile of garbage run by business-minded executives who neither understand, nor care what made the MCU so special during the Infinity Saga. I really hated The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, and only marginally liked Thunderbolts. That being said, I have avoided the Disney+ shows because I didn’t want to be disappointed. Hell, I didn’t even watch Daredevil Born Again, which has been received quite positively. Yet, given that The Punisher: One Last Kill was just a one off special, I thought it’d be worth a shot.

I liked it, but I was also pretty lost for the first half. Mostly because I haven’t been watching all MCU entries like I used to. So, I don’t know if my missing context is because of that, or because the special did a bad job of establishing things.

Brutal—But Somewhat Mid—Action

The episode literally starts off with a bunch of thugs harassing a veteran and killing his dog. John Wick really seems to have influenced the action genre tremendously. After that, we see Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) living in Little Sicily, a neighbourhood controlled by the Gnucci Family. I haven’t watched The Punisher Season 2 or Daredevil: Born Again, so I might be missing some context. However, exposition makes it clear that Frank killed almost everyone from the Gnucci Crime Family. Now, Ma Gnucci (Judith Light) wants revenge, and has set Frank up for a brutal ambush, which she tells him about for some reason.

The first half of the episode really builds on the tense setting. Riots, unrest, unchecked criminal activity, these form the backdrop of Frank’s current world. Within this hellscape, there are a few regular folk like Dre (Andre Royo) and his family who own a bakery, Frank’s neighbours, as well as the homeless veteran who loses his dog. All of them come under the crosshairs when thugs and criminals storm Frank’s apartment building hoping to hunt him down for Gnucci’s reward money. However, they inflict terror upon the residents as well because… why not?

While the brutal action makes for less than a third of the episode, it was quite entertaining. Not the best I’ve seen, but certainly kinetic enough to appreciate. However, it does feel a tad edgy. As if the MCU is trying too hard. What’s worse is that the action doesn’t exactly escalate. Nor does the tension feel like it’s burgeoning. Emotionally and conflict-wise, the episode’s graph feels pretty flat and linear.

That being said, the episode did an almost good job with this one-off story. Enough that it hints at the MCU still has a few good titles in its roster.

Feels Like A Drag At Times

As much as I wanted to enjoy this one, I can’t help but feel disinterested in the characters and world. I already know enough about Frank Castle, so his flashbacks and nightmares didn’t really add all that much for me. In fact, despite not consuming recent entries, I could have easily pieced his situation together. However, the episode spent way too much time portraying things about him that we already know. 24 minutes, that’s how long it takes for the action to really start. Everything until that point is set up, and not the most engaging or interesting either. In isolation, some of the sequences are actually quite visceral. However, in its totality, they didn’t work as well as they should have.

However, the set up is not as big a problem as the underwhelming payoff. Which begs the question: why did the emotional payoff not make sense? Is it because this is meant to be just a mindless action set piece? If that’s the case, why bother with all that emotional set up? Why revisit every single Gnucci kill, but have Ma Gnucci escape? Why build the tension so badly, but end with a relatively mediocre final showdown in the bakery? I had way too many questions and doubts about this episode.

It’s not a bad watch, but it does feel pointless. For fans, this would be a treat. For non-fans (like me), this feels more like background noise. Yes, I see that The Punisher almost gave up and was about to off himself, but in the end dons his costume again because the world needs him. However, the emotional arc of this episode didn’t exactly immerse me enough for that ending to feel rewarding. The only rewarding part of the ending was that the dog-killer got what he deserved.

The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) Ending Explained (SPOILERS)

Frank manages to fight off every criminal that is wreaking havoc, because he’s The Punisher. He falls out of his apartment building, and spots Ma Gnucci. He begins to make his way towards her, but then hears a little girl calling out to her father. Echoes of his own daughter calling out to him haunt him. He decides to save the family, letting Ma Gnucci flee in her car.

Frank then kills the criminals attacking the bakery owner we saw in the beginning. They are united as a family, and the daughter gives him a paper rose as a thank you. Later, Frank visits his family’s graves again, hanging the paper rose there. He tells her that he still has work left to do.

In the end, The Punisher—donning his costume—stops the thug from the beginning from hurting an old couple. He takes the hat and returns it to the veteran, before executing the thug for killing the veteran’s dog.

Given that I am clearly missing a lot of context from previous Marvel entries, my only takeaway from this special is that The Punisher was about to call it quits, but one act of ‘heroism’ has him return to his vigilante ways.

Is The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) worth watching?

It’s not bad. It’s not the best TV special out there, but it did manage to use Frank’s instability to create some pretty visceral action sequences. If you’re a fan, you’ll love it. If you have given up on the MCU, then maybe this one might not work for you.

In Conclusion:

The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) is what you get when you try to make a half-ass John Wick. It’s honestly entertaining and brutal, but also a drag and pointless.
