January 2026 Film & TV Recap! The first Film & TV Recap of 2026, and it was something. I didn’t watch a lot of films or TV, but that’s also because I had other things I was occupied with. However, I did end up watching quite some interesting films and shows, including one that might just make it into my 2026 top 10.
So, without further ado—
January 2026 Film & TV Recap (FILMS):
Casino (1995) dir. Martin Scorsese

I’ve been meaning to watch this Scorsese crime epic for a long time now. Unfortunately, a lot about this one just didn’t work for me. Particularly the whole romance plot, which I found to be very distracting.
It’s not a bad film by any stretch of the definition. However, it didn’t appeal to me enough. I admit that it’s my opinion, and anyone who says this is one of their favourite Scorsese film isn’t wrong.

My Rating: ★★★1/2
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) dir. John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein

This one ended up being a lot more fun and a lot smarter than I originally expected. While it’s not perfect, the film does have a lot of personality and character that made it an absolutely entertaining watch. In a world saturated with content, it might not stand out, but if you’re looking for an amusing watch that actually respects its source material, this one is sure to appeal to you.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) dir. James Cameron

I was told not to watch this one by more than a few people. I wish I hadn’t listened to them.
Now, Avatar is one of those franchises that really shouldn’t exist. However, its existence also the pinnacle of good CGI and Mo-Cap. James Cameron is a true visionary and there’s no denying the stunning visual brilliance of this film/franchise. The story and characters were pretty flat, but the film as a whole wasn’t that bad. In fact, I found it quite meditative at times, and I do look forward to watching Fire & Ash.

Indie Author (2026) dir. Adam Grady

I’ve been hearing about this documentary for a while now. A lot of indie authors who I follow did talk about it, and even appeared in this documentary. So, when I saw that the makers had released it on YouTube for free, I just had to watch it.
Now, as a self-published author, this was quite a comforting watch. As a filmmaker, the documentary did leave a lot to be desired. All in all, a nice watch for anyone who’s interested in finding out about the indie publishing industry.

Eko (2025) dir. Dinjith Ayyathan

This was by far one of the best cinematic experiences of the month, maybe even the year.
I absolutely loved Kishkindha Kaandam, and despite my very high hopes, Eko delivered! The third and final part of Bahul Ramesh’s Animal Trilogy is a mind-boggling puzzle that left my jaw hanging when I heard the final dialogue of the film. An absolutely masterpiece.

January 2026 Film & TV Recap (SHOWS):
Kerala Crime Files

I only decided to watch this one because Season 2 is part of Bahul Ramesh’s Animal Trilogy. While Season 1 had its issues, Season 2 was nearly perfect. Overall, both seasons were decent and enjoyable watches, with Season 2 far surpassing Season 1.

Crayon Shinchan Spin-Off

I honestly only began watching this because I was sick and I wanted something comforting. I ended up bingeing on all four volumes in two days because it was just stupidly entertaining. I won’t say much here, because each volume was unique and different, yet familiarly silly and entertaining.
If you’re a fan of Crayon Shin-chan, you’re sure to enjoy this one. Have you seen it yet?

Finally,
January 2026 was a slow but good start to 2026 on the Film & TV side. Given what I have planned for this year, I might slow down on the reviews, so I don’t know how February is going to be like. But, I know I’m going to keep watching films and shows because they do serve as important sources of inspiration and learning for me.
