Creature Commandos Season 1 Review:
Okay so, this is the first of three major DCU properties by James Gunn released in 2025. Although this series premiered in the end of 2024, the season finale released on in 2025, so that counts.
I didn’t know about this show until after I watched Superman (2025), which is when I added it to my watchlist. Having just finished my rewatch of Parks & Recreation, I thought this would be the perfect time to binge on a short and sweet series. And, I was in the mood for something superhero. Yes, I know I just finished Gen V and Peacemaker, not to mention Blood Reunion, all less than two weeks ago. But, what can I say? I love the genre!
The Bride (Indira Varma) is a reanimated corpse running away from Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), the monster who demanded a bride but then killed their maker after he caught them making love. Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao) ws a human born with her lungs on the outside. Her father altered her DNA, leaving her with a fish-like appearance and dependent on water to breathe. G. I. Robot (Alan Tudyk) has one simple goal in his fabricated existence: to kill nazis. Doctor Phosphorus is a super villain with radioactive powers who killed mob bosses for revenge, then became one himself. And Weasel (Alan Tudyk) is… whatever he was in The Suicide Squad.
When an off-the-record black ops demands superhuman intervention, you know they’re the perfect monsters for the job.

The Suicide Squad, with Monsters
Creature Commandos, at first glance as well as after finishing the show, is very clearly just James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad with monsters. From the humour to the plot, to even the way their backstories play a role in their development as well as pushing the plot forward, Creature Commandos is a lighter version of the 2019 Suicide Squad movie.
However, credit where due: each character does bring something unique to the table. Particularly, their backstories. The Bride’s story speaks of freewill and how women used to often be treated as objects without agency. G.I. Robot’s story, speaks of something similar, highlighting the evils of singular worldviews. Each episode follows a different character’s backstory, which always ends up being a tragedy inflicted by circumstances or bad luck. None of the Creature Commandos, except Doctor Phosphorus, are actually villains, if you think about it. They’re not even misunderstood; they’re outright discriminated against because of who they are.
Like The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos also features an overseas mission, the political complications of which demands the use of off-the-record teams. Enter Task Force M (Like Task Force X, but more inhuman). As the series progresses, we get glimpses into each of their pasts, establishing character and motivations, which tie in with their immediate objectives.
However, the plot itself is quite straightforward, with more attention given to each backstory instead. The characters each feel unique, albeit a tad two-dimensional. Despite that, they have enough personality to pass off as real people, making this one another (almost) hit for the DCU.
The James Gunn Formula

From Guardians of the Galaxy to The Suicide Squad, as well as Superman and Peacemaker, James Gunn’s trademarks have become pretty clear to fans. An ensemble cast, great group dynamics that feel organic, a complex plot that actually ends with a thrilling climax and an emotionally satisfying finale, almost all using deep cut characters and elements from the comics. Creature Commandos is no exception. Creature Commandos has all of the above, including the use of old timey popular songs to add a layer of vibes to action scenes. Except, it’s not all Gunn, and it shows.
I don’t know if I’m tired of the formula or Gunn’s relative distance with this show, but I found this to be the weakest James Gunn project I’ve watched. It’s charming. It’s entertaining. But also, it’s just okay.
I have to say here: I did not enjoy the music sequences. It was cool in the first episode. Felt repetitive in the second, and just outright tedious by the third. I love James Gunn, but to imitate his style for every single episode felt a little too much. The show uses his formula well, but without the man himself there is something evidently missing.
The show does have heart. And it also has ample entertainment value to deserve a second season. As part of a bigger franchise, it is quite impressive. But, in the shadow of Superman & Peacemaker, this one feels quite underwhelming.
Creature Commandos Season 1 Ending Explained
Princess Ilana Rostovic is the mastermind behind the whole plot! The Creature Commandos, led by the bride, find security footage of her meeting with Clayface in her castle. That, coupled with Waller’s reveal that Dr MacPherson (Stephanie Beatriz)—whose professional opinion is the reason behind their assassination attempt—was actually Clayface leads the Bride to connect the dots. But, she doesn’t kill Rostovic because she wants to stop World War 3. The Bride kills Rostovic to take revenge for Nina, her new and only friend.
The Creature Commandos return to A.R.G.U.S., where Waller has refurbished a new chamber for The Bride and her ‘new team’. The Bride, along with Doctor
Phosphorus, Nosferata, Khalis, Weasel, G.I. Robot with a new body, and King Shark become the new Task Force M.
In a post credits scene, we see Eric Frankenstein shacked up with a new old woman, eating some kind of stew made of pigeon droppings.
Creature Commandos is exactly The Suicide Squad with monsters. It even explores some of the same themes: how society is treats those different from them. The only exception is everyone except Doctor Phosphorus is actually innocent and wrongfully incarcerated.
Creature Commandos Season 1 Worth Watching?

Depends.
On the positive side, the show is pretty damn entertaining, with a mass appeal perfect for fans of mega franchises. It feels very much like peak marvel, which is a huge win for DC fans.
But, on the downside, the show is above average at best. The season depended too much on the James Gunn formula, resulting in a sometimes tedious experience. The ending even—despite me believing it’s perfect—doesn’t exactly leave you wanting more.
Will There Be A Creature Commandos Season 2?
Yes. In fact, the show is already renewed for season 2, with development ongoing at the time of writing this post. With the DCU all set to expand, I am curious to see what Season 2 might have in store for us.
In Conclusion:
Creature Commandos Season 1 is quite an entertaining, if not a tad mediocre, entry into the new DCU. It has all of James Gunn’s trademarks, but seems to be missing his brilliance.
