October 2024 Reading Wrap Up! Two more months to go for the year to end. Can’t believe we’re already here…
October wasn’t as eventful as September if I’m being honest. However, I did find two more Top 10 books for the year, so that is a huge win in my books!
Without further ado—

October 2024 Reading Wrap-Up!
Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett – ★★★★★
I think I’m finally at that point where Discworld has become less comedy fantasy and more satire fantasy. Men at Arms is the second of The Watch sub-series, where we follow the Night’s Watch as they investigate murders around Ankh Morpork on the cusp of technological advancements.
Men at Arms was simply MINDBLOWING! From character, to plot, everything tied in with the themes so perfectly, I can’t even begin to describe how brilliant this book is. Terry Pratchett is a genius, and every book I’ve read of his has only confirmed that fact!

I’m reading the Discworld books in publication order, and this is just book 15. But, it is my second favourite Discworld novel so far (first being Small Gods)!

Sul: From Gold to Iron & Rust by Jacqui Davis & Katy Grierson – ★★

I really wanted to like this book. The cover art grabbed my attention almost immediately. Sul is an epic fantasy book that follows the tragic story of Elmes, a king who sets out to conquer foreign lands as revenge for the murder of his uncle. What follows is a wild tale full of unique cultures, demons, vampires, magic, and so much more.
The premise and the story revolving around Sul piqued my interest. Sadly, the book just didn’t work for me. I don’t like leaving bad reviews, but there just weren’t any redeeming elements in this one for me. There was a lot of potential, however, and I hope the authors work on strengthening the best parts of this world for future instalments.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir – ★★★★★
I got this book on my birthday last year. After reading The Martian, I wanted to dive into this one straight, but my out-of-control TBR meant I only got around to reading it this month. And boy, what a ride it was! A worthy spiritual successor to The Martian, Project Hail Mary follows a lone scientist locked in a spaceship as it hurtles across space on a suicide mission that will decide the fate of humanity.

Survival science fiction with hard science and a compulsively likeable protagonist? Not only did I LOVE this book, it’s going to be on my Top 10 reads of 2024!

October 2024 Current Read:

I’ve had the eARC for Interstellar Megachef from Netgalley on my Kindle for months now. Finally, I picked it up in October. The British Bake Off in space? What’s not to like? The premise alone is so wacky and gripping. I was hoping to finish it before the month’s end, but looks like I’ll need a few more days. Ah well, it’s set to release in November, so I know I’ll be done before the launch date.
My review will be posted on SFF Insiders.
Finally,
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! I hope my reviews and thoughts help you decide on your next read. Writing these reviews (both the short versions as well as the longer posts) has been a very rewarding experience, especially since I’m working on my own.
Speaking of, have you read Abandoned by the Gods? It’s an Indian Grimdark Fantasy Anthology set in the godless world of Adeva. The ebook is FREE to all my mailing list, so if you’d like to read it, subscribe to my newsletter! (I only send out one a month, unless I have any other major announcements to make.)
