May 2024 | New title reveal, writing updates, SPFNO and more!

May 2024 was quite a crazy month. Apart from making progress on my main WIP, I also did some good work on my other projects. So, let’s dive in!

My WIPs as of May 2024

Abandoned by the Gods (Short Story Collection) – Releasing on June 14th 2024!

Releasing June 14, 2024

I finished proofreading the final draft of Abandoned by the Gods! At the time of writing this post, I’ve already uploaded the final files to KDP, and IngramSpark (for the print editions).

This week, I will do the final step, which is to set up StoryOrigin to deliver the free e-books to my newsletter subscribers. In case you haven’t already, now’s the best time to subscribe! Only two weeks to go!

My story got featured in Grimdwarf!

I’ve been reading the Grimdwarf Magazine by JCM Berne since January 2024. I pretty much made up my mind to submit one short at least, but only managed to do that last month.

And it was one of the stories from Abandoned by the Gods. Titled ‘Servant of God’, it is a roughly 12k word long short (technically a novelette but let’s not worry too much about it). Split into 3 parts and published in volumes 21-23, you can read them all for free!

New Title Reveal!

First draft progress is looking good!

I had revealed the title to my newsletter subscribers last month. So, here it is—my next book “ISLAND OF THE DYING GODDESS”

For now, you only get a title, but I’ll soon start revealing more details. For now, let me just focus on finishing my draft.

Speaking of, I didn’t finish Draft 1 like I had anticipated, but I am happy with the progress. I know it’s going slower than expected, but I’d rather do this slow and right. Besides, I’ll need at least another round or two of edits before I can do beta reads. However, the next drafts should go by faster since those will be mostly smoothening out the rough edges.

By the way, I’m almost done with the cover for this one too, and I LOVE how it’s looking. I made this one by myself too, except it’s more complex and detailed than Abandoned by the Gods. Once I have the green light from my designer friends, and I’ve made my peace with my design, I’ll do a cover reveal!

Help! My Dog Is The Chosen One! | #SPFNO | Kindle Unlimited

A tweet from fantasy author Ronit J

I had entered Help! My Dog Is The Chosen One! for SPFBOX. It’s a prestigious self-published fantasy competition, which can give a tremendous boost to all entrants. Sadly, the high popular demand and new arbitrary selection process meant I did not make the cut.

I’m sad, but I’m not bitter. Mark Lawrence has done a tremendous amount to support fantasy writers, and despite not making the cut, I will continue to support him. To those who made the cut, CONGRATULATIONS! I AM ROOTING FOR YOU!

To those who didn’t, there’s a parallel SPFNO trend happening where members of the community are trying to bring attention to the awesome authors who didn’t make it. Excluding the few who are making this a bitter thing, I love how supportive the community has been. My Twitter engagement has been going great since SPFNO started trending. If not SPFBOX, then maybe I’ll find a few more readers through SPFNO. Either way, I’m excited for the next step for my debut novel. Because—

I’m going to put Help! My Dog is the Chosen One! on Kindle Unlimited!

Surprisingly, I got 2 ebook sales from IngramSpark since my last updates post, but I still think KU will be a better direction for my book. Amazon has given me more steady sales than IngramSpark, especially with ebooks.

I’ve already had IngramSpark cancel my ebook from their sellers. I’m waiting for confirmation that the book has indeed been removed from everywhere before I apply for the Kindle Select program.

May wasn’t as heavy a month reading-wise as April was. In fact, I took a brief break and read two non-SFF books to cleanse my palette.

You can check out my reading wrap up post, where I’ll talk briefly about each book I read in May, and link my full reviews for anyone who might be interested.

I reviewed all the SFF titles for SFF Insiders. They’re either already live, or will be posted soon. You can read them here!
