Meet the Characters | Personages that make my debut novel!

Meet the Characters is a fun little interview post series I did on Instagram, where I shared snippets of fictional interviews, which I conducted with my debut novel’s primary characters.

Meet the Characters cover post, featuring the book cover of "Help! My Dog Is The Chosen One!" by Ronit J, next to a dog lying on its back.
Ignore the arrow, it’s supposed to be the cover for what was originally a carousel post.

Hope you enjoy them!

Meet the Protagonist: Kunal

Meet the Characters: Kunal! An image post featuring Kunal (a guy with his back turned to us, arms raised before him in defence) Name: Kunal Age: 25 Location: Mumbai Strengths: n/a Weaknesses: Anxiety How Kunal describes himself: I don’t know where to start... I’m just a regular guy you know... I’m... I-I... Sorry, I didn’t know I was supposed to describe myself. I swear, I don’t feel this anxious over texts or online chats. Can we start over?* *we could not start over because he panicked and left the chat.
Kunal is your average guy. Since mental health and anxiety are core themes of the novel, I used my own struggles with anxiety as an inspiration for Kunal. I relate to all the characters in one way or another, but with Kunal, it’s like a Bovary-Flaubert situation

Meet the Tank: Adira

An image post featuring Adira, a white shorthair cat that is running away from the camera Name: Adira Age: 28 Location: [redacted] Strengths: warrior, berserker, you stand a better chance fighting a lion Weaknesses: none How Adira describes herself: What do you mean describe myself? Your world is under threat from a... are you even listening to me? It’s like you want your world to suffer!!* *Adira left after this statement. We apologise for the abrupt end.
I wanted Adira to be a cat because I’ve seen stray dogs run away from lone cats. Also, I think it makes for a funny visual, seeing a white shorthair be the group’s tank!

Meet the Mentor: Guru

An image post featuring Guru, an owl that is shooting a magical attack outwards. Name: Guru Age: [redacted] Location: [redacted] Strengths: second-strongest high-mage of their world Weaknesses: hasn’t yet figured out the weave of our reality How Guru describes themself: I am a high-mage. In order to learn the deepest secrets of the universe, we have to shed every bit of our identity, except our name. Hence, I will not be able to tell you much about myself. I could, however, talk about Snaitun and the threat he poses to your world...* *okay maybe these interviews weren’t a good idea...
Owls are often associated with wisdom, so it was kind of natural to have the mentor character be one. However, I decided to make them non-binary because I wanted there to be some queer representation in my novel, and have a good explanation for it.

Meet the Chosen One: Burfi!

Meet the Characters: Burfi! An image post featuring Burfi, an Indian Pariah dog that is jumping up Name: Burfi Age: 2 Location: [redacted] Strengths: Invulnerability Weaknesses: Is just a dog How Burfi describes himself: Woof! Woof woof! Bark! Whelp! Awoooooooo! Note from the interviewer: I apologise for the lack of translation. Je ne parle pas portugais.
This here is the VIP. I know that my dog who inspired this story is a golden retriever (well, she’s my in-law’s dog, but I love her like my own), but I chose to make my chosen one an indie because I am in team ‘Adopt don’t Shop.’

Meet the Characters: End note

An End note featuring a Notice: We were unable to complete the interviews because our office was attacked by some mind controlled stray animals. To know the full story, you can read the book... Also has the book cover for "Help! My Dog Is The Chosen One!" by Ronit J
This is a reference to actual events in the book. Read the book to find out!
